Donation allows Decatur County organizations to impact youth

GREENSBURG – This summer, children in Decatur County were given the chance to participate in summer camp and agriculture programs sponsored by community organizations. Instead of being cooped up inside all summer long, kids were able to enjoy a break from school and participate in a variety of fun activities.

Decatur county organizations received help from a local farmer and, in turn, provided children with camp scholarships and agriculture education programs.

Local farmer David Miers directed $2,500 to the Decatur County YMCA, through America’s Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund. With the donation, the YMCA was able to provide three children with scholarships to attend a 10-week summer camp. The kids participated in a wide variety of activities at camp, including swimming, organized games, crafts and weekly field trips. The grant allowed the YMCA to provide children in need a chance to be active with their friends.

“Camp gives children the opportunity to learn, grow and have fun in a safe, caring environment surrounded by committed staff,” said Diane Hart-Dawson, CEO of Decatur County Family YMCA. “They learn values and positive behaviors, and can explore their unique talents and interests, helping them realize their potential.”

Miers also directed a donation of $2,500 to the Decatur County Community Foundation, to help sponsor youth ag education in the community. The funds were used to support programs at the Decatur County Fair this summer. These programs were geared toward youth, and included an educational tent, interactive computer games, and a display booth. The educational tent taught children about caring for farm animals and basic science and math skills used in the farm industry. Interactive game players learned about agriculture history and how products get from farms to their plates.

“These programs are so valuable to our county because they educate the community as to the influence of agriculture and the opportunities in the field of agriculture for the younger generation,” said Deb Locke, Decatur County Community Foundation executive director. “The grant has helped our Ag Committee have a huge impact on agricultural education for students, and we are all so grateful for the generosity of Monsanto so these programs could be initiated.”

America’s Farmers Grow Communities gives winning farmers the opportunity to direct a $2,500 donation to a nonprofit organization in their county. Farmers have helped fund more than 5,200 organizations in rural America through America’s Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund.
