Hoosier FFA students prepare to become future of agriculture

Greensburg Daily News

---- — EVANSVILLE – “What are your plans after graduation?”

Students hear this question on a regular basis as they near the end of high school. Indiana FFA members recently had the chance to learn about possible answers to that question, in the form of opportunities that await them in the agriculture. According to the National FFA Organization, 17 percent of the civilian workforce is involved in some facet of American agriculture.

Stewart Seeds recently initiated an effort to help local FFA chapters understand future opportunities in agriculture. Local FFA chapters were invited to a seminar that outlined current technologies at Monsanto and Stewart Seeds, while conveying the need for qualified graduates in agricultural careers. FFA members also spoke with agronomists and district sales managers from the region, learning about the working research protocols involved in testing corn populations.

More than 70 FFA members participated in the seminars, held at two different locations. Three local FFA chapters, Mt. Vernon, Gibson Southern, and South Spencer, were represented at the seminar in Evansville, Ind. The seminar in Greensburg, Ind. hosted four FFA chapters, including South Decatur, North Decatur, Rushville and Milan.

“We received very positive feedback from the FFA advisors and were encouraged to continue to provide these types of informational opportunities for the students,” said Brian Denning, Stewart Seeds technical agronomist. “It was an enjoyable experience to interact with the students and we will continue to find ways to provide them with educational opportunities.”

This is the first year Stewart Seeds has provided these seminars to local FFA chapters, but the team is looking forward to more engagement in the future. In this particular program, each chapter in attendance was awarded a sponsorship of $100, while the chapter with the most members was awarded $500.
