Members of the North Decatur FFA Chapter won the Area I Livestock Evaluation Contest held April 11 at the Decatur County Fairgrounds.
Team members Kaleb Kramer, Andrew Martin, Lindsey Wietlisbach, and Justin Geis placed first out of the 36 teams from Southeastern and South Central Indiana competing.
This Area I championship, which is the second in a row for the team, qualifies them for the state livestock evaluation contest in May at Purdue University. A second team from ND consisting of Kyle Kramer, Haley Wesseler, Emma Spreckleson, and Rebecca Koehne also qualified for the state contest by placing fourth. The top five overall teams from the contest qualify for the state competition.
In the livestock evaluation contest the students must first visually evaluate beef, swine, sheep, and goats for their market and breeding characteristics. Following this visual appraisal the students then present an oral critique of the class to the contest officials. The two teams from ND will join over 50 teams from throughout Indiana for the state competition on May 18.
