Krieger, Wolter qualify for Swain at Dairy Show

GREENSBURG – A small class of Dairy Show contestants showcased their best animals and made their respective bids for Thursday’s Tom Swain contest Wednesday morning.

When the show had ended, Kayleigh Krieger took the Grand Champion prize in the Expert Showmanship category, closely followed by Kayanna Wolter as the Reserve Champion. Both young women earned the opportunity to be part of the prestigious 4-H animal showmanship event Thursday evening.

Judge Marla Stone, a veteran of such competitions for more than two decades, routinely complimented the group of hard-working 4-H’ers who managed to move animals far larger than they about the arena, often making it look effortless.

The summer heat, however, did its part to make a few of the animals a tad testy Wednesday morning.

Ryan Crosby’s prize winning Holstein, “Arlene,” defiantly mooed and occasionally refused to budge during the Intermediate Showmanship portion of the show. Arlene and Ryan, however, had previously earned trophies for Grand Champion Dairy Cow and Champion Senior Cow, perhaps allowing her a bit of diva-like behavior late in the competition.

Arlene also had the customary honor of being milked after the show by Miss Decatur County Ericka Carman, 4-H Queen Kayanna Wolter and 4-H King Andrew Martin. Arlene was “warmed up” by Brenda Crosby, a previous Tom Swain contestant and 10-year 4-H member.

In the individual showmanship categories, Nick Nobbe placed ahead of competitor Austin Crosby at the beginner level. Nick elected to move on to the intermediate category, challenging Ryan Crosby and Stephanie Nobbe. Stephanie took the top spot there and faced Kenzie Krieger and Nathan Nobbe in the senior category.

Finally, Kenzie earned a first place finish in the senior showmanship category and faced off against eventual winner Kayleigh Krieger, runner-up Kayanna Wolter, Neal Nobbe and 10-year member and previous Tom Swain competitor Laura Crosby.
