North Decatur FFA holds annual banquet

GREENSBURG – The North Decatur FFA Chapter held its annual awards banquet April 15 at the Decatur County Community Schools Central Office, with a total of 175 members, parents and guests in attendance.

After a meal featuring smoked pork chops, those in attendance were treated to remarks from current Indiana FFA Officer Sarah Dirksen. Dirksen, 2013-14 State FFA Sentinel, grew up in Jay County on a dairy farm. She challenged everyone to take chances and step out of their comfort zones from time to time. One never knows what they will like or what they will be good at if they don’t try new things.

During the awards portion of the banquet, 31 members were awarded their “Discovery” degrees, 18 their “Greenhand” degrees, 23 their “Chapter” degrees, and five there “Hoosier” degrees. Degrees are awarded based upon FFA participation and member Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects.

Members were then recognized for their participation on the chapter’s Career Development Event (CDE) teams – including soils evaluation, crops judging, forestry judging, dairy foods evaluation, livestock evaluation, dairy evaluation, horse and pony evaluation, practical forestry judging, parliamentary procedure and leadership contests. In addition, members were recognized for participation in FFA basketball and community service activity involvement.

Members of the senior class were given special recognition for their activities with the chapter throughout their junior high and high school careers. In addition, scholarships were given to three senior members – Lindsey Wietlisbach, Grant Ricke and Erin Yager.

Several special awards were given out including the “Bent Fence Post” award to Dillon Siefert, the Star Greenhand Award to Haley Wesseler, the Star Farmer Award to Lindsey Wietlisbach and the Star in Ag Placement Award to Grant Ricke.

The evening concluded with the recognition of the retiring of the 2013-2014 officer team and the installation of the 2014-2015 officer team. Those installed into office included Danny Dierckman, president; Andrew Martin, vice-president; Emily Scott, secretary; Kayleigh Krieger, treasurer; Jaelyn Matthews, reporter; Nicole Scott, sentinel; and Kyle Fogle, student advisor.
