Cougar FFA holds annual banquet

WESTPORT – The South Decatur High School (SDHS) FFA held their annual Parent and Member Banquet on the evening of Friday, May 2.

The evening began with the annual pork chop dinner, followed by a speech from Ethan McNeely, State FFA Sentinel. Awards were then presented, with several members earning recognition for their accomplishments throughout the year.

Morgan Tomson was presented her plaque and banner for being named the 2013 State Star Farmer last June at the State Convention. Lexie Armand won several areas including Scholarship, the Dekalb Leadership Award, Star in Agribusiness, and State winner in Speciality Crop Production. Tori Weber won the Kova Mental Attitude plaque. Megan Vanderbur won the Chapter Star Farmer, Top Sophomore, and placed 3rd in Beef Proficiency. Logan Owens, Jacob Johnson, and Will Smiley were awarded Star Greenhands. Jakob Ogle and Hunter Gatewood tied for top honors in citrus sales while Austin Petro was awarded 3rd.

SDHS’s four seniors-- Austin Petro, Paje Smiley, Tori Weber and Lexie Armand, were recognized and allowed to share some moments about their FFA experiences. Retiring officer plaques went to Tori Weber, President; Paje Smiley, Vice President; Lexi Armand, Secretary; Austin Petro, Sentinel; Chayla Cox, Reporter; and Megan Vanderbur, Treasurer.

Thirty members competed in several Career Development Events. These included soils, forestry, crops, livestock and dairy. The following individuals and teams will be competing at this year’s State Convention in June. Megan Vanderbur in Public Speaking, Hunter Gatewood and Dalton McNealy in Horticulture demonstration, and Katie Vanderbur in Discovery Public Speaking.

The Novice Chapter Meeting Team will also compete at the State Convention. Members are Will Smiley, Jacob Johnson, Cecil Richey, Logan Owens, Walker Gabbard, Nathan Benge, Daniel Mapes, Will Armand, Zoey Nobbe, Kayla Carder, Carl Kroger, Brooke Owens and Zane Brown. Congratulations to all members for an outstanding year.
