Greensburg — May 18 is Free Fishing Day in Indiana and no fishing license or trout/salmon stamp will be required to fish public waters across the state.

On Saturday, May 18, Hoosiers will be able to cast their lines and enjoy a quiet day on the water, according to a press release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

This will be the state’s second Free Fishing Day and the weather should be mild, allowing anglers to enjoy the day.

City park ponds in Evansville, Terre Haute, Indianapolis, Avon, New Albany, Fort Wayne, Lafayette and Carmel will be stocked with more than 1,000 catchable size channel catfish by the DNR to make the day more enjoyable for participants.

There will be family friendly events at five different locations throughout the state, aimed at teaching angling skills to both adults and children, and bringing fishing families together. For more information about these individual events, contact: Munger Park, Lafayette, (574) 896-3673; Crosley Fish & Wildlife Area, North Vernon, (812) 346-5596; Lakeside Park, Fort Wayne, (260) 244-6805; Riverside Park, Indianapolis, (317) 234-8440; Lake Waveland Park, Waveland, (765) 435-2073. The ponds at Munger, Lakeside and Riverside parks will all receive catfish through the Go FishIN program and the DNR to support their Free Fishing Day events.

Free Fishing Day is part of a new urban fishing program called Go FishIN in the City, and its mission is to bring fishing opportunities to people who live in Indiana’s urban areas where fishing spots are very limited.

Clint Kowalik, DNR Go FishIN coordinator, said he expected better weather and better fishing than on the state’s first Free Fishing Day, April 20. “Go alone to a quiet, secret spot, explore new waters with a friend, or take your family to a local city park pond,” Kowalik said.

May 18 is the only day Hoosiers can fish without a license, but the DNR and the Go FishIN program will stock around 5,000 fish throughout the state in 2013. Additional information about the Free Fishing Day events can be found at dnr.IN.gov/fishwild/3598.htm.
