State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) met with Decatur County volunteer firefighters David Israel and Andy Witkemper at the Statehouse Wednesday. Israel and Witkemper testified during a committee hearing on a resolution authored by Leising urging the legislature to study if it is a conflict of interest for a volunteer firefighter to also serve as an elected official. Israel and Witkemper currently serve in both capacities and would be forced to choose one or the other in 2014 under legislation passed last year. The resolution passed out of committee 8-0. Pictured from left to right are Israel, chief of Burney-Clay Township Volunteer Fire Dept. and township trustee; and Witkemper, Marion Township volunteer firefighter and township advisory board member.
