Dachshund Rescue of North America, Inc. (DRNA) a rescue organization for the popular “hot-dog dogs,” has been named one of the 50 charitable causes to win a $1,000 donation from iGive.com.

The DRNA is based in Greensburg and provides rescue and placement of unwanted or displaced dachshunds and dachshund mixes in both the United States and Canada.

The group is committed to increasing public awareness against animal cruelty and overpopulation while rescuing and placing displaced and unwanted dachshunds throughout North America. The short-legged, elongated canines are members of the hound family, and are popularly known as wiener dogs due to their long narrow build.

“We were thrilled to find out about this unexpected donation,” Jill Blasdel-Cortus, CEO and president of DRNA, said. “We would like to send out a big thank you to all of our members using iGive.com, and urge those who haven’t registered to check it out.”

Blasdel-Cortus was pleased her organization had been awarded the money.

“We’re always excited to get money,” she said. “It just means more dogs we can help.”

Blasdel-Cortus added that the DRNA has put about 7,000 dogs in good homes.

iGive.com is a Website that allows Internet shoppers to purchase goods from more than 680 brand name stores. When those goods are paid for, portions of the purchase are donated to the buyer’s favorite cause.

Any charitable organization that registers with iGive.com is eligible to win Surfathon cash. Surfathon is a program being sponsored by iGive that is giving away the $1,000 to five causes every month.

“Surfathon is an easy, free way for people to help their favorite causes, all while doing their on-line shopping,” Robert Grosshandler, iGive.com founder, said. “iGive.com members have listed over 25,000 charitable causes with roughly 15 new causes listed every day, allowing anyone to find a charity close to his or her home and heart. Our members have listed an amazing variety of causes from large international aid organizations to local teams and animal causes.”

The Surfathon contest will run through July 31, 2008 with winners being announced the first week of every month. For more information on the contest, visit www.igive.com. For those interested in helping the DRNA or learning more about dachshund adoption, visit www.drna.org.
