Kiwanis Action Club crafts pillows for assisted living residents

GREENSBURG – Residents of Aspen Place Health Campus received the gift of extra comfort Thursday afternoon thanks to a donation made by members of the Greensburg Kiwanis’ Action Club.

Members of the Club, which is composed of more than a dozen local individuals living with disabilities, stopped by Aspen Place to offer 17 neck pillows that will be distributed among Aspen Place’s residents. Members of the group selected a variety of materials and meticulously stuffed each one. The pillows were then sewn by Kiwanis member Donna Taylor, who heads the Action Club.

Adorned with a variety of designs – from guitars to animal paw prints – the multi-purpose pillows are intended to add comfort to residents making use of wheelchairs. The pillows also work well as neck support while reclining in bed.

Aspen Place Resident Activity Director Meagan Swineford said the reception from residents has been “very positive” thus far, and she enthusiastically joined fellow employees and several members and associates of the Action Club for a group photo Thursday afternoon.

For their part, the Action Club members appeared every bit as excited to give the pillows as the Aspen Place residents were to receive them.

On hand were Action Club members Anne Smith, Kathy Minor, Charlie Mourey, Laura Monahan, Patty Kirtman and Shirley Plowman. The club representatives were able to visit the campus Thursday and presented the pillows in person to Swineford and Activity Associates Jason Schwering and Ali Hountz.

The gathering, for some, was a reunion of sorts, as Swineford’s previous work with DSI allowed her to get to know Kathy Minor and Anne Smith, alongside numerous other Decatur Industries clients. Thursday’s donation was the second of its kind at Aspen Place, and Donna Taylor told the Daily News the club is far from finished with the project.
