The Decatur County United Fund awarded $43,740 in special grants to 12 organizations at its June Board of Director’s meeting.
The 2013 special grants set a record for the largest amount awarded by the United Fund in a single special grant cycle. This is, in part, due to the success of the 2012 Campaign and exceeding its goal.
The grants represented a broad range of categories including recruitment dollars, equipment needs, security updates, training, operating expenses, and education resource kits.
“The amount of this year’s grants shows the benefit of giving to the Decatur County United Fund, but also how much more we can do with additional dollars from the campaign.” United Fund Executive Director, Joane Cunningham, shared. “Each agency was eligible to receive up to $5,000. These dollars are very beneficial to the many non-profits that applied. Budget cuts and other reductions in funding are a constant struggle for many agencies.”
2013 Special Grant recipients are: Advocates for Children $5,000 for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) recruitment dollars; Big Brothers/Big Sisters $5,000 for staffing and office materials; Bread of Life $1,229 for work table and stainless steel food cart; Carousel Play and Learn Center for $3,487 for updated security system, infant room project, school age classroom chair replacement, and playground improvements; Catch-A-Ride $5,000 to provide a training session for Decatur County drivers on operating the mobile data transmitters (MDT) installed on all vehicles, and fuel and maintenance costs; Decatur County Youth Baseball $3,459 for replacement of bats, batting helmets and other equipment; Our Hospice of Decatur/Shelby Co. $3,595 for one inpatient facility sofa sleeper.
Additionally, Human Services received $4,836 for electronic needs and food pantry equipment; Legal Aid $2,000 towards victims attorney salary and travel expenses for court cases; Meals on Wheels $3,000 for operating expenses; United Way 2-1-1 $2,134 for program services; Decatur County Family YMCA $5,000 for 12 education resource kits, software and activity packs, and two laptops.
Decatur County United Fund will continue to provide additional special grant opportunities when and if campaign exceeds goal.
In 2012, $25,000 was awarded in special grants with $30,642 in 2011 and $22,000 in 2010. These dollars are in addition to the regular community investment/allocation given to the many funded partners of the Decatur County United Fund.
