Westport Baptist

Westport Baptist Church will hold its annual Vacation Bible School (VBS) from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday July 21 through Thursday, July 25.

This year’s theme is “Son-West Roundup.” Activities include Bible study, crafts, music, refreshments and recreation. Classes are available age 4 through last year’s eighth graders.

All children are welcome to attend, so bring your friends! If you have questions, call VBS director Jennifer Baltus at 593-1018 or Rev. 591-3721. The closing program will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 26. The church is located on Main Street in Westport, next to Clarkson’s Market.

Summer has arrived and it’s a good time to schedule your Sunday to be a greeter and/or offer a story for the children of the congregation.

The children are always attentitive and will listen to anything you might have to tell them about the Bible, even if they’ve heard it before. We older folks enjoy hearing those Bible stories again, too. Your story doesn’t have to be long with big, fancy words. Make it a simple story like you would tell your own children/grandchildren. Look for the new sign-up sheet on the table in the hallway. Now is the time to find a Sunday that is best for you.

A sure sign of summer is that our church softball team will soon have their first game. They will be playing on Sunday and Tuesday evenings at the New Point diamond. They look forward to seeing those who played on the team last year as well as any/all new players. They also welcome any/all cheerleaders.

The first game of the season will be on July 9 at 8:30. Hope to see you there to play or cheer on our team.

Remember how dry it was last year? So dry we couldn’t even have fireworks on the Fourth of July. Well, compare that to this year. Isn’t it wonderful to look out and see green grass and flowers blooming? The corn seems to be showing off to prove how fast and tall it can grow. Is it trying to make up for last year’s crop?

  • Poverty has its advantages I must confess to a severe case of poverty. I never took a vow of poverty; it just seems to have worked out that way for me. I am so poor the church mice have packed their bags and moved on. If I knew where they moved to, I might join them.Being poor
