---- — Proverbs 25:25:
“As cold water to a weary soul, So is good news from a far country.”
I have heard it for years; “Bad news is what sells papers.” So it would seem. It doesn’t matter the size of the city from which the paper comes, you can be assured there will be some bad news in it and, the bad news may well make the front page.
I have also heard that bad news spreads fast. That may well be very true as well, but I would like to think that good news has a place on the front pages of our newspapers and a headline article on the primetime TV news.
We do hear about some good things that are being done in our society, but it’s usually hidden in the mumble-jumble of the bad or least interesting news items.
As the passage from Proverbs says, “As cold water to a weary soul, so is good news from a far country.”
Many years ago, I hosted a weekly radio broadcast that was heard in the Caribbean Islands. It was always exciting to receive a letter from one of the listeners. They would tell me how much they enjoyed the program and how the message touched them.
It was refreshing to my soul to hear how God had been working through me for that time. It was an interesting ministry as I would prepare an audio tape and mail it to the radio station located on the island of St. Martin.
It seemed that every time I went to the post office to mail a tape the postage was always a bit different, even though the package weighed the same. When we figured out how much the shipping should be, I asked the postmaster for a copy of the rate out of the rate book she used. From then on it was always the same.
In case you haven’t caught on yet, this was all long before the advent of home computers. Today I would do the message on the computer, make a file and email it to the radio station. Now, that’s really some good news.
The Bible is full of news, a lot of good news along with some not-so-good news.
For those who walked in obedience to the Lord’s commands, there were blessings. For those who walked in disobedience, there were consequences.
The good news I have for you today is, because of His grace, there is eternal life. Walk in obedience to His Word, do right things, worship Him and there are blessings. I want to share this good news with everyone I reach.
As I observe humanity every day, I observe a lot of unhappiness along with an unsettled life. Wandering from relationship to relationship, job to job or, none at all, listless and depressed, humans are in great need of hope and true love.
So smile at someone today; give someone a good word. Share the joy of the Lord with someone. That really is part of spreading good news to others. In this crazy world, we need good news and a lot of it.
Good news was given when the birth of Jesus Christ was announced and, the good news hasn’t stopped. Yes, I would love to start hearing good news from some of those far places, but if we believe in scripture, then we believe it gets worse before it gets better.
Keep the faith and share it at the same time.
