A positive minute: What a time

Greensburg — John 14:27 — “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

As I write these words this morning I am also listening to Boston police communications. They are doing an intensive door-to-door search of residences and businesses in an attempt to locate the surviving suspect in the bombing that occurred at the Boston Marathon this past Monday.

This week we have also heard the story from the city of West Texas. A terrible explosion has leveled many homes and there have been some deaths related to the explosion.

With North Korea’s posturing with their threats of attack and the continuing efforts of terrorism, we really have much to pray about and a great need to remain vigilant in our daily lives.

I know; we are in Southeast Indiana and we do feel somewhat removed from the actions of terrorism, but there are other situations that happen around us every day that we may not be fully aware of.

With all the negative news, how are you handling it? Do you find yourself worrying about your own safety? We need to be concerned and keep ourselves informed without letting the bad situations rule our lives.

I was born after World War II. I have no idea how people felt about that war, but we had a lot of men and women called up for duty and I am sure there were many people on the home front who were very concerned about the outcome of the war.

I do remember Vietnam. There was a lot of concern and unrest from the citizens of this country as that action escalated. We move forward to Iraq and Afghanistan. There has been a lot of concern about the future of our country.

The Oklahoma City bombing, Waco and the 9/11 attack. All of this leaves us with a feeling of vulnerability. How do we cope?

My question to you is this: Do you have a relationship with Jesus Christ?  He is the one who gives us peace in the times of turmoil. The issues in this world will never be corrected by a politician. We must put our trust in one who cares about us and cares for us.

Many men’s hearts are evil in nature. They have no love for humanity; consequently, evil prevails through those who allow the evil one to work through them. The battle continues between good and evil.

Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” Why? Because it is awfully difficult to think clearly about anything when we allow our raw emotions to prevail and dictate to us how and what we do. A clear mind will allow a person to think and hear from the Holy Spirit about what to do in a time of crisis.

I have an old blackboard at the coffee store that says, “Think. Really Think. Try. Really Try.  Believe. Really Believe.”  And I will add to that, “Pray. Really Pray!” That is a winning formula.
