A positive minute: Ground school

Greensburg — Psalm 25:9 “The humble He guides in justice, And the humble He teaches His way.”

I remember flying into San Francisco years ago. I had heard the Bay Area could get quite foggy, but I had no idea how foggy it could get until that mid-morning flight started its approach to the airport.

As we were making the approach, I looked out the window to nothing but fog.

I must tell you that I was a bit nervous about flying blindly as we descended. I closed the window cover so as to not have to look at the situation. I got curious a bit later and opened the cover to being able to make out the form of some earth and buildings as we approached the runway. Needless to say, we had a smooth landing.

A friend of mine is a pilot. He has been flying aircraft for many years. We were discussing air flight once and he told me that Ground School is where a person learns the basics of flying. One needs to know the dynamics of flight and then take instruction as how to fly the airplane.

Part of that training can also be learning how to fly only with the instruments. That means one will fly the aircraft by what the instruments are telling him rather than looking out the window to fly the craft.

Our lives are much the same process. While on this earth, we are in “ground school” preparing for eternity. There’s a lot of learning while we are on this earth. Sometimes we don’t get a very good grade, but we most certainly have an opportunity to get better at learning all we can about our future.

God knew that humanity would need help while upon this earth. He gave us the 10 Commandments and then he sent his only begotten Son, Jesus, to this world. Jesus died for our sins and today he helps us get through the Ground School of Life as we prepare to live with him in eternity when this life is finished.

Have you taken the training to become “Instrument rated?” In other words, are you living by faith? Yes, faith in the Lord Jesus to give us guidance through the Holy Spirit. When we live by faith and practice it every day we soon become aware that we are “instrument rated” and the Holy Spirit is in control of our lives. If you have never had that experience I recommend that you find a church, talk to someone about your spiritual needs and begin to take the class at a spiritual “ground school” as you begin your journey in this life for the life that is yet to come.
