Greensburg swamps Bulldogs in softball

— Greensburg exploded for four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings en route to a convincing 11-3 victory over Batesville at home Thursday night.
In a game played in a light drizzle and what generously could be called a chilly evening, the two squads fought on even terms until the Lady Pirates seized the lead in the third inning when Megan Hahn singled, advanced to third on a sacrifice by pitcher Niki Neisius and a wild pitch. With two outs, Brianna Donnelly scored Hahn from third on a hit up the middle.
The Lady Bulldogs threatened to tie the game in the fourth on two shots, but Neisius struck out Julie Meyer and induced Stacey Kessons to ground to short.
Then the flood gates opened. Rachel Schmeltz singled to right, Sarah Schulman sacrificed her to second before Melissa Fry was safe on an error. Chastity Wilson walked and Melana Minning singled scoring Schmeltz and leaving the sacks loaded.
Hahn doubled clearing the bases and Greensburg had a 7-2 lead.
Neisius gave up a single in the top of the fifth before Greensburg put the game away.
Carlee Eversole opened the fifth with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. Schmeltz and Shuman walked to load the bases for Melissa Fry who tripled into the alley in left center field to bring them all home. She came around to score on Minning’s double to deep center field.
The Bulldogs scored a run in the seventh on a Devin Moorman hit, a passed ball and Meyer’s single, leaving the Pirates an 11-3 winner.
The junior varsity game was called after two innings due to darkness.
