The Lady Pirates hosted the Columbus East Lady Olympians in a doubleheader Saturday and came away with the same result in both games.
They shut out the Olympians 2-0. The major difference in the line score for Columbus East was the absence of a hit in the first game.
“Two shutouts in a doubleheader against a Columbus East team is always a good day,” reported Lady Pirates’ varsity coach Mike Hahn.
The first game started with a gem.
“Our defense was strong and the pitching performance from Megan Hahn was phenomenal. It's not often you see a no-hitter in high school softball, but we did,” Coach Hahn, who is also Megan’s dad, said.
Hahn stepped to the mound in the first and effectively took control of the Olympians. Through the complete seven-inning game, Hahn struck out four and allowed no hits. The only base runners for Columbus East came on two walks issued by Hahn and a second-inning error. Only one got to second base, on a steal, and none went further.
In both games the Lady Pirates scored to start the game giving their pitching staff all the runs they would need.
In the first game they scored when Megan Hahn doubled and came around on a hit by catcher Briana Donnelly. They got an insurance run two innings later when Malana Minning drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on a hit by Niki Neisius.
The second game started with single by Minning. She stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a hit by Donnelly.
Their insurance run came in their final at bat when Carlee Eversole reached first on a two-out single, stole second, advanced on a hit by Rachel Schmeltz and scored on Sarah Schuman’s second hit of the game.
In addition to Schuman, Minning and Eversole also had two-hit games as the Lady Pirates collected eight hits. Two other hitters were denied hits by two sterling defensive plays by the right side of the Olympian infield.
The Olympians starter, and finisher, for both games was H. Wallace who limited the Pirates to three hits in the first game and eight in the second.
“In game two we again were able to score in the first inning,” said Hahn. “We played errorless ball, which allowed Niki (Neisius) to pitch her game.”
Greensburg comes back Tuesday with another tough game.
“Our next game will prove to be tough again as we face Connersville who we beat in the Sectional title game last year,” reported Hahn.
