Greensburg and North Decatur ran at the Regional Track
Tournament at Shelbyville last night and came home with one
athlete, Erica Schwering, qualifying for next week’s state qualifier in Bloomington in the shot put. Schwering unleashed her best throw of 37’1.5” on her final attempt while Leas notched sixth with a throw of 36’4”.
In the discus, Leas unleashed a throw of 120'9” on her final attempt to claim fifth place while Schwering finished eighth with a best throw of 112’4”
Another athlete from this region who qualified was Val Wagner of
Jac-Cen-Del. She participated in four events qualifying third in the
100-meter dash, finishing sixth and eighth in the 200 and 400,
respectively and missing the ticket to Bloomington in the long jump
by one place. For the evening she single-handedly notched 15
points to propel her school to a 16th place finish.
The Pirates entered their 4X800 relay team, which finished 13th, and
two hurdlers in the 100-meter hurdles. Taryn Owen placed 14th and
Hannah Doerflinger 12th in the event. Kendra Fasbinder finished
10th in the same event and was noticeably ill at the end.
She was also slated for the 300 meters but was unable to
participate after the 4X100 relay event.
“I couldn’t do it and coach (Betsy Davis) didn’t want me to,”
Fasbinder said. With the air of the traditional Cubs’ fan, she added,
“There’s always next year.”
In the 4 X 100, the North Decatur relay of Amelia Daeger, Fasbinder,
April Fruchtnicht and Hayley Hayden finished in a time of :51.87
seconds which is believed to be a school record time. The event gave
the Chargers a win in their heat and a seventh place finish overall.
“The 400-meter relay team set a new school record and I’m proud of
that,” Fasbinder said.
Fruchtnicht also participated in the long jump finishing 10th and
Hayden ran in the 100 and 200 trials finishing 16th and 10th,
respectively.
The Lady Pirates continue to be led by the strong right arms of
Schwering and Mollye Leas.
