The Lady Pirates met South Dearborn for the second
time in four days at the Bulldogs’ softball diamond and came away
with a hard-fought, extra-innings victory, 3-2.
After South Dearborn tied the game in the sixth inning, the Pirates
were able to get two hits and a couple of breaks courtesy of the Lady
Knights.
Carlee Eversole led off with a single and Briana Donnelly followed
with another base hit on which Eversole was thrown out at third trying
to take the extra base, the fourth Pirate base-runner thrown out
during the evening. Donnelly took second on the throw and was
replaced by Emily Springmeyer as a courtesy runner for the catcher.
She took third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch to win the
game.
The Pirates got on the score board first when Megan Hahn, the
starting pitcher, reached second base on a throwing error and
scored on a base hit by Eversole.
The Knights tied the game in the third inning when Kayla Dell tripled
down the left-field line and scored on a single two outs later. The
Pirates got that run back in the bottom of the inning. Niki Neisius
singled and took second on a passed ball before Melana Minning
sacrificed her to third. One batter later she attempted to score from
third on a grounder and was thrown out, but Rachel Schmeltz’s
two-out single scored Dee Neisius with the go-ahead run.
South Dearborn got that run back in the sixth when they collected
back-to-back singles on a Texas Leaguer by Helena
Ciminowasielewski and a comebacker that Niki Neisius got a glove
on but left no play for her infielders. An attempt to tag
Ciminowasielewski on a force play got no one out and led to a run
on a fly to center. Hayley Ballentini's throw was online but a split
second late to get Ciminowasielewski at the plate. After a strike out,
Ballentini picked a fly ball off about knee high to take away a base hit
and two runs.
That set the stage for the fateful eighth inning.
