Meyer hurls one-hitter

Greensburg traveled to Lawrenceburg Tuesday evening to play
Lawrenceburg. The biggest part of that story is, if this game were
played at another level, the traveling secretary should have had a
case of bubbly with him. It would be time to celebrate as
Greensburg claimed the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference (EIAC)
crown behind the power pitching of their ace, Alex Meyer.
Had Meyer been pitching a nine-inning game and maintained the
average number of strikeouts the final two innings, he would have
notched an eye-popping 21 strikeouts. Still 17 Ks in seven innings
will pop a few eyes.
Meyer, who entered the game 49th in the state in the number of
strikeouts, had been registering 8.4 strikeouts per game. That
average was the sixth best in the state. Adding 17 more strikeouts
and one more game, he now averages striking out 9.5 strikeouts per
game, third best in the state.
Impressive statistics that Greensburg fans were expecting but the
number of strikeouts per game isn’t a state-wide stat. Wins and
strikeouts are and Meyer is still under the radar as far as those
numbers are concerned.
In the game Meyer gave up five walks and a lone single by the
firstbaseman McElley to lead off the sixth inning. He struck out the
side in the second, fourth and seventh innings in amassing the 17
punchouts.
Jim Faehr, pitching for Lawrenceburg was nearly as effective as he
kept the Pirates off the score board for six innings. In the seventh
inning, Brok Hersley led off with a single and Kieren McCamment
followed with a home-run for the only two runs of the game. Faehr
struck out seven Pirates and gave up a total of six hits and two walks
in defeat.
