Defending champion Julia Potter of Granger shot an even-par 71 in the second round of the Women’s Amateur Championship to take the lead at 142 heading into the final day. Nina Whalen of Indianapolis remains in close contention in second with a 144 at Ackerman Hills Golf Course in West Lafayette.
Rounding out the lead group for the final round of the stroke play competition is 1987 champion Julie Carmichael of Indianapolis at 148.
After 36 holes of stroke play the field was flighted into seven flights, with the low 20 scores and ties making the Championship Flight. Any player who carded 159 or better made the top flight.
The two golfers representing Greensburg went in opposite directions Wednesday as Angela Gauck improved her position to a tie for sixth, 10 strokes behind Potter and qualified for the championship flight. Kelsea Ice registered an 84 in the second round to register a two-day total of 162. She stands in a six-way tie for 27th place.
Gauck, who registered back-to-back 76s, remains in a tie with Kristtini Cain of Marion and this year’s Open champion Kristi Piepenbrink of Greenwood. Also tied with this trio are Amber Lindgren and Lauren Showers, both of Kokomo.
Golfers tied with Ice are Christina Beyerl, McCordsville, Clare Cornelius, Indianapolis, Sarah Windlan, Anderson, Britt Knutson, South Bend and Chelsea Silvers of Martinsville.
