The North Decatur girls golf team charged into their season in the muggy heat to come home with a convincing win at North Branch Wednesday.
The Lady Chargers swung their clubs with accuracy and brought home the first win of the season against an outmatched Union County team. North shot a 194, easily besting Union County’s 235. Leading the charge on the links was Tara Lecher and Whitney Beard, who each earned medalist honors by carding 45s. Jordyn Sparks of Union County was the only member of the rival team to keep pace with the hot swinging North golfers. She finished the day with a 49. Union County’s second lowest score came from Kayla Chamness, a 58 that was good enough to tie North’s last place score by LeAnn Power. For North, Abby Stewart shot a 51; Taylor Rempe a 53; and Katie Gahimer shot a 54.
The strong opener makes North coach Dan Borns optimistic about his team’s season but also hints at places where the girls can make improvements.
“This was a good start to the season for us. We still have a few girls scoring higher than what they are capable of, so hopefully the team totals will continue to come down,” Borns said. “Lecher and Beard both played well today, and a couple of the girls are also getting close to breaking in to the 40s.”
The girls will get another shot at improving when hit the Greensburg Golf Course for the Greensburg Invitational on Friday. They’ll travel to Hillcrest next Thursday to battle the Bulldogs of Batesville and Wildcats of Franklin County.
