Greensburg had its first test Friday night against Indian Creek and
generally passed its first exam.
The test, however, exposed some areas that must be improved
before they start hitting for real in front of a state-wide audience at
Lucas Oil Stadium Saturday.
“The defense played well but the offense struggled with penalties.
We couldn’t get any consistency. We’d move the ball, then we’d have
a penalty and have to reset.” said Coach Eric Schreiber. “We did score on a pass to Jeremy Dance from Chris Blankman.”
The defense generally played well giving up one touchdown to
Indian Creek. As would be expected form the Braves, the touchdown
came on a pass, and it was set up by a pass.
“They were able to hit one over the middle and then caught a
touchdown pass in the end zone on a blown coverage,” Schreiber
reported.
Offensively, the Braves ran about half the time but did not do well
running the ball.
The Pirates were also able to mount considerable pressure against
the passing attack as well. Defensive tackle Jon Cunnington
intercepted a screen pass and the defensive lines knocked down
several other passes.
“Other than a couple of blown coverages, we did pretty well on
defense,” Schreiber concluded.
The Pirates have an extra day of preparation before starting play
against Shelbyville next Saturday afternoon in the newly opened
Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
