Greensburg’s varsity volleyball team defeated East Central in three games 25-14, 25-19 and 25-18 in a match that was delayed for several minutes by the power surge experienced by the city of Greensburg Thursday night.

The surge left the gymnasium in total darkness for several minutes as the lights are designed in such a way that they have to cool down before they start powering back up. After the lights started coming back up, the officials permitted both squads to go through their warm-up drills to keep warm and ready to play once power was finally restored completely

When the lights came back on, the Pirates held a 10-5 lead, a ration they maintained until libero Lauren Ehler was the beneficiary of a spike and a block by sophomore middle hitter Emily Lehman left the count at 24-14. Following the side out, Shea Whitaker served out to give the Lady Pirates the first game.

In the second game, the Lady Trojans and Pirates were never separated by more than two points, with East Central showing the way after a 6-6 tie early in the game. When Kylie Wood knocked down a good set by Rachel Schmeltz, the Pirates had the serve and a 19-17 lead. Wood padded the lead on a kill by Erica Schwering who got the ball back with a block after a side out.

During her service, Chas Lecher registered a kill and a block to extend the lead to 24-19. When the Pirates got the ball back, Whitaker again served out as Lecher blocked a Lady Trojan shot at the net.

The third game followed the same pattern until Woods served five straight points to stretch the 13-11 lead to 18-11 before East Central earned a side out.

After five exchanges, Lecher served back to back aces for a 23-17 lead, and Schmeltz put it away with another ace.

Statistics for the game were: Wood 13-of-14 serving with eight points and two aces and 16-of-21 hitting with six kills; Casey Nelson 11-of-12 hitting with three kills; Schmeltz 14-of-15 serving with eight points and 2 assists setting; Lecher 10-11 serving with seven points and five aces, 17-of-21 hitting with eight kills and four blocks and Schwering 16-of-17 serving with 10 points and two aces and 11-of-13 hitting with six kills and she also had four blocks.

After winning the first game, the junior varsity let the second game get away form them. They were leading 20-15 when Catie Hollis began serving for the Trojan apprentices. Before she relinquished the serve, the Lady Trojans had a 21- 21 tie. Eventually the game came down to a 24-24 tie with Greensburg serving and both squads needing but one point.

After a hard-fought final point with both sides making repeated nice saves, East Central got the side out for the final point.

The final game was a 15-point rematch of the final five points of the second game as the Trojans won 21-25, 25-24 and 15-13.

Laura Welage served 10-13 with seven points and an ace and hit 15-of-16 with five kills; Hailie Ballentini was 10-of-10 serving.
