The Greensburg “7A” boys’ basketball team opened their season at Rushville with a 45-32 victory while the “8A” team was defeated 58-45.
The seventh grade started quickly and held a 15-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. They continued to dominate in the second stanza and increased the lead to 21-4 at the half.
Rushville rallied in the third period to cut the lead to 30-21 at the end of the period but the junior Pirates held off the young Lions in the final period.
The Pirates were led in scoring by Sean Sellers with 26 points followed by Brad Wilson with 13 points. Eric Kroger, Tom Lawrence and Jacob Kelso added two points each. Tom Lawrence cleaned the boards with seven rebounds. Sellers had three assists while Tye Fleetwood dished out two.
Rushville was led in scoring by Laird with 12 points followed by Hoeing with 11 points, Cox 5, and Stevens and Stiers with two each.
The eighth grade game was close until the last three minutes when Rushville widened the margin. They led at the end of the first quarter 11-8 but the Pirates came back in the second period to take a 29-28 half-time lead. The Rushville Cubs again took the lead after three quarters, 41-38.
The Cubs outscored the Pirates by 10 points down the stretch to claim the 58 - 45 victory.
Austin Schultz had 11 points and seven rebounds; Tyler Burcham matched the 11 points and led the team with seven assists and Riley Billieu had nine points and a team-high four steals. Luke Kand added eight points; Colin Evans 4 and Elliott Green 2. Kand added a team-high nine rebounds.
Scoring for Rushville were Brad Wilson with 18 points; Garrett Rosenfeld 14; Matt Chendler 13; James Brashaben 5 and Kyle Hoeing and Vinton James added four each.
