After a successful Saturday night of music and fun, the Tree City Fall Festival continued into its third day, Sunday, with Community Church of Greensburg hosting a worship service on the square.
In folding chairs to camping chairs, a crowd gathered on Broadway Street to raise their voices and hearts in worship. Near the close of the morning service, the pastor called on the crowd to be the change the community needs.
“Be that church, that city on a hill,” he called.
Many members of the outdoor congregation stood and walked up to the stage to share in prayer. Others stayed in place, contemplating the message.
Not to lose its standing as a “church that rocks,” the service closed with up-tempo songs of celebration, with adults clapping and children dancing from their seats on the square.
After a powerful morning, the tone of the festival shifted for the first-time Greensburg Idol event. A total of 12 contestants took to the stage to show off their singing talent for a panel of three judges, made up of Jason Jones, Barry Morton and Sheryl Herbert.
The judges called back half of the contestants for a final round, made up of Elizabeth Crank, Haley Schwering, Grace Fisk, Spencer Heaton and Chris Bierhaus. When the last song was sung, the judges declared the winners. In third place, with a prize of $25, was Fisk. The $50 second-place prize went to Heaton, and first place honors went to Schwering.
Schwering said it was exciting to win against a great group of competitors. She said she recently performed the same songs at Sunman Idol, where she was also chosen for the final six.
“I love these songs,” she said. “Country is just my style.”
On Saturday, bands like RivetShack from Indianapolis and Skeeter McGee from Greensburg led up to the evening’s headliners, Asia featuring John Payne.
Before Asia took the stage, band members from Skeeter McGee invited the kids at the Fall Festival to join them on stage to dance and sing with them for one song, “I’m a Believer.”
As the crowd waited with anticipation, Asia featuring John Payne hit the stage. Payne himself noted that Greensburg and the Fall Festival were lucky to have dodged the rain that hammered nearby counties, which led the band into the popular Asia 80’s hit “Who Will Stop the Rain.”
After a few songs, Payne introduced the members of the band and invited the crowd to sing along with one of Asia’s biggest hits, “Heat of the Moment.”
Afterwards, the group stayed behind to take photographs with locals and sign a few autographs.
