Bookmobile out and about

Greensburg — On June 25, the Greensburg- Decatur County Public Library Bookmobile's odometer reached 100,000 miles.

Excluding a few trips to Indianapolis for maintenance, all of these miles were driven in Decatur County. Despite making its home at the Greensburg main library, you are more likely to see the Bookmobile out and about at one of its 19 stops.

This summer the Greensburg Farmer's Market was added to the list of stops, which span from the Decatur County Family YMCA and Quality Day Care to Heritage House and Morning Breeze. Since opening in 1985, the shelves have grown to include more than 2,000 books, 500 DVDs, and over a dozen periodical subscriptions.

More than 500 patrons are served by the Bookmobile, a number which will continue to grow as new stops are added.

Despite most of the stops being at schools and nursing homes, the Bookmobile isn't just for students and seniors. All patrons of the library can use the Bookmobile's resources and are encouraged to do so. The bookmobile has tons of great resources.

As the miles add up, however, we are looking to replace the current Bookmobile with a newer model.

Library Director Andrea Ingmire recently prepared a ÒRequest for BidsÓ that will be submitted to several Midwest Companies that build Bookmobiles.

The Library Board will accept bids from these companies and then begin the decision-making process in order to purchase a new bookmobile.

Though the vehicle itself may change, the mission of the Bookmobile will remain the same: To deliver books, movies and other services to the community.

The Bookmobile's summer schedule is listed below. Feel free to come in and browse, talk to driver, Deb Smith, and see what the bookmobile has to offer. Checking out materials is as easy as stopping by the main branch. Just present your library card and you'll soon be on your way. Don't have a library card?

All residents of Decatur County, as well as non-resident property owners, are entitled to a Ôfree' Evergreen Indiana Library card. This card can be obtained at any of the Greensburg Ð Decatur County Public Library locations: Greensburg Library, Westport Branch and Bookmobile with proper ID.
