SDES students put on Christmas concert

WESTPORT – On Dec. 12, the first through third grade students of South Decatur Elementary School (SDES) put on their annual Christmas concert.

Dressed in their best, the young boys and girls of SDES took to the risers to showcase their musical talent and holiday spirit. Aside from a short welcome by the principal, students read all the narration to introduce each song, providing a bit of historical background for each piece.

Students prepared for weeks, practicing songs, movements and narration. Some numbers were performed by just one or two grades and some were sung by all. A crowd favorite seemed to be “Joy to the World, My Shopping’s Done,” which was performed by the whole group. The students were quick to prove they knew the traditional version as well, performing it after the lighthearted reimagining of the classic song.

SDES music teacher Karen Meeker led the students through the concert, keeping the large group of students focused and in time. Students performed a variety of upbeat holiday songs, ranging from the classics Christmas carols that everyone knows to some newer tunes, singing something for everyone.

Before the final number, a series of students took to the microphone to thank the teachers and staff who made the event possible, the parents and family that showed their support and the school, which continues to allow the arts program to thrive.

Following the students’ messages of gratitude, the concert finished with a jazzy medley of “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree,” “Deck the Halls,” “Oh, Christmas Tree,” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” which the young artists performed beautifully.

The hard work and dedication of the students showed in the loud, clear and confident voices of the children as the performed for their family and friends. The gymnasium was filled with proud parents, grandparents and family members out to support the children and the arts. With all the talent and support that was in evidence at the concert, it’s easy to imagine next year’s show will be even better.
