Crowd favorite doesn’t disappoint

Beef & Boards presents “The Sound of Music”

Greensburg — Few stage productions are as well known or as well liked as Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music.” Just the name of the show conjures up images of Julie Andrews cavorting about the hills of Austria in the classic 1965 film version.

Audiences near and far quickly recognize the title song as well as “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Me,” “Sixteen Going On 17” and others, and the story of the free-spirited nun-in-training whose life takes an unexpected turn after being sent to care for seven children in pre World War II Austria is well known to most people who have even the slightest affection for theatre.

The cast of the ongoing Beef & Boards’ production of “The Sound of Music” can be proud of the show they’re staging through June 30.

Cara Statham Serber carries the show in the lead role of Maria Rainer. She has a lovely voice and is quite convincing in her portrayal of the music-loving Maria.

David Schmittou does a solid of job of playing the male lead, Captain Georg von Trapp, and also has a strong voice and good stage presence.

The seven Indianapolis-area children who handle the parts of the von Trapp siblings are all entertaining and performed admirably. Especially noteworthy were eldest von Trapp daughter Liesel (Hillary Smith) and youngest daughter Gretl (Emma Rogers), a little scene-stealer if ever there was.

As you would expect, everyone else in the cast does a fine job of providing an evening of entertaining live theatre including Sarah Hund (Elsa Schraeder), Jeff Stockberger (Franz), Eddie Curry (Max Detweiler) and Suzanne Stark (Mother Abbess).

I enjoyed this show very much and recommend it to one and all.

Beef & Boards is located at 9301 N. Michigan Road, Indianapolis.

The show includes an all-you-can-eat buffet and free parking.
