Christmas cheer arrives downtown

GREENSBURG – With just a little coaxing, Eagan Horine told Santa Claus exactly what he wanted for Christmas.

It was a list populated with trendy toy names like Bakugan, based on a Japanese animated action adventure television series, BeyBlade, a spinning-top toy, and Lalaloopsy, a line of rag dolls that is popular with girls.

“I liked talking to him,” Horine, 8, of Greensburg, said after finishing with Santa. “You only get a chance to talk with him once a year.”

Adults and children braved face-numbing temperatures Tuesday to enjoy free horse-drawn carriage rides, admire holiday-themed window displays and otherwise bask in the holiday atmosphere in downtown Greensburg.

The annual festivities got off to a bumpy start Friday when Main Street Greensburg postponed plans for the traditional holiday events. Instead, those events – minus a kickoff parade that never happened – were moved to Tuesday.

Parents and children who picked up blank “passports” at City Hall visited businesses on the square to have them stamped for a chance to win $10 gift cards. A horse-drawn carriage guided by Batesville residents Walt Mahan and Jerry Vogt clippity-clopped around the courthouse, giving parents and children a thrill.

Some seasonal events will continue.

For example:

•     The Winter Farmers Market this Saturday, which began in November, will continue on the second Saturday of each month through April. Items for sale between 9 a.m. and noon at the City Hall gym, 314 W. Washington St., will include fresh produce, baked goods and homemade crafts and gifts, all from local vendors.

•     Santa will be back to listen to children’s wish lists from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday and Dec. 20 in the City Hall lobby. Parents can get a free picture of their children’s encounters with Santa and let their children enjoy coloring and crafts.

Main Street Greensburg puts on the annual activities as a service to the community and to encourage people to shop locally, said Sarah Robinson, the organization’s executive director. She said buying from local businesses supports the local economy by keeping more money circulating in Greensburg and Decatur County.
