SDES “Pinocchio” is great family fun

And that’s no lie

WESTPORT – Fifth and sixth grade students at South Decatur Elementary School (SDES) will stage a production of Disney’s “My Son Pinocchio Jr.” at 7 p.m. on April 24 and 25 at the school.

After the roles were cast, students began practicing under the tutelage of SDES music teacher Karen Meeker in September. Since then, students and staff at the school have worked very hard to prepare for the upcoming play. Meeker collaborated with SDES art teacher Lori Bierhaus to help make this production a reality.

According to Meeker, staging this play has given the students the opportunity to learn that a large production often requires many people to complete a number of tasks in a variety of capacities to achieve one goal.

Students have been dutifully attending practices after school, making arrangements to work around sports, activities and family life, all while not neglecting their studies. Both students and the parents who make such activities are to be commended for their commitment to the arts.

“My Son Pinocchio Jr.” tells the story of lonely toymaker Geppetto, his puppet-turned-son Pinocchio, and the Blue Fairy who uses her magic to bring the boy to life. Initially overjoyed to be a parent, Geppetto doesn’t realize that parenting comes with a whole new set of worries.

Pinocchio’s behavior isn’t what Geppetto hoped for and he insists his new son is defective and that the Blue Fairy take him back. Offended by the possibility that her streak of “perfectly granted” wishes may have been broken, the Blue Fairy and her four fairies-in-training go back in time to witness the puppet’s offenses.

What results is a wildly entertaining journey of adventure, accepting one’s children as they are and the love of family which features all the most enjoyable elements of the classic tale of Pinocchio. The SDES students have taken their roles to heart, giving their all during performances. They have been practicing for months and it shows in the singing, dancing, sets and overall confidence of a well put together production.
