Children’s Health and Safety Fair returns for 6th year

Gilliland-Howe will be providing a free lunch of chili, hot dogs and drinks to everyone attending. There will also be a number of free giveaways and drawings hosted by Gilliland Howe. In the past, items such as tablets, cameras, televisions, toys and bicycles have been given away to attendees. Normally, anywhere between 25 and 30 gifts are given away, but that number may go down if the purchased gifts cost more than they have in previous years.

Games will be provided during the family-friendly event. Families will be able to enjoy corn hole, drunk goggle games using the goggles that simulate alcohol impairment, a bounce house and several carnival style games. The Decatur County YMCA also encourages everyone to stay after the event for a free family swim in the YMCA indoor pool from 1 to 4 p.m.

The Decatur County Sheriff’s Department will be on hand to provide safety demonstrations and information. Representatives from the Decatur County YMCA should also have lessons and information on water safety available.

The Greensburg Fire Department (GFD) has been teaching fire safety to area schoolchildren, instructing them on safety rules in the event of a fire and teaching them how to safely getting out of a burning house. The GFD will be on-site at the Children’s Health and Safety Fair with the Fire Safety House, an RV-type trailer filled with smoke to simulate a burning home.

Students watch a video that explains how to find an exit in a smoke-filled home. Any children who did not get to experience the Fire Safety House at school are invited to go through during the fair. Children are encouraged to go through with the parents and to instigate a discussion about the family’s escape plan should a fire occur. It is important for every member of the family to know what to do in the event of an emergency.
