Chamber of Commerce holding 7th Shopping Scramble

GREENSBURG – The Greensburg – Decatur County Chamber of Commerce will be holding their seventh annual Shopping Scramble Wednesday, Oct. 2.

According to Chamber member and office coordinator Melissa Bruns, the Shopping Scramble is an event modeled after a golf outing. The purpose of the scramble is to promote local merchants and raise money for a local charity with sponsorship and entry fees. For the $20 registration fee, each shopper will receive a continental breakfast, lunch, afternoon refreshments and a chance to win fabulous door prizes. There is no set amount for each shopper to spend.

During the day-long event, each shopper will be given a score card and asked to visit at least 18 local businesses. Area businesses have been encouraged to offer special promotions for scramble participants, including but not limited to discounts, in-store prize drawings, games and free samples.

The annual Shopping Scramble has a history of proven success. In 2012, 60 participants shopped at more than 45 local businesses and generated over $7,000 in just six hours. Each year, the proceeds from the scramble are used for a $500 donation to a local charity and a $1,000 small business grant. Last year, the AGAPE Center received the cash donation and Crystal Clear Window Cleaning received the small business grant.

The non-profit organization to receive the cash donation has not been selected yet for this year. The small business grant, which is funded by the Shopping Scramble registration fees, is awarded in November at the Chamber’s annual meeting. The Greensburg – Decatur County Chamber of Commerce is currently accepting applications for the small business grant. Applications can be obtained at the Chamber office, located at 125 North Broadway Street. Winners must be Chamber of Commerce members.

The Shopping Scramble will begin at First Presbyterian Church, located at 202 North Franklin Street. There, participants will have a continental breakfast and information session about the event. The shopping begins on the “front nine” in the Downtown area at 9 a.m.
