As her name might imply, Marita Field spends most of her time tending to the fields and helping run the expansive Wenning Farm, a job she couldn’t be happier to have.
Field was born and raised in Decatur County. Farming has always been part of her life, even from a young age. Now, she is one of the partners at the Wenning Farm, working closely with her brother Roger Wenning to keep the farm up and running.
She moved on to North Decatur High School after spending a few years at a Catholic school. Following her graduation, she shuffled off to Bryman School in Indianapolis to pursue her goal of becoming a medical assistant.
“I just wanted to do something in the medical field,” she explained.
Once finished with school, she married her husband Sam Field and spent two years living in Terre Haute while he finished his education. While Sam Field pursued his teaching degree that would eventually bring him to North Decatur Elementary as a fifth-grade teacher, Marita Field worked in a hospital lab. Her duties there included drawing blood and performing various lab tests.
After Sam Field got his degree and the job at North Decatur, the couple journeyed back to Decatur County to settle down. Once back, Marita Field spent a few years working for a local doctor as a medical assistant. When her employer announced his impending retirement, the opportunity to begin work at Wenning Farms presented itself.
“It just all worked out,” Marita Field said. “It seemed like the perfect match.”
Initially, her duties were to take care of and look after the farm’s hog population. Wenning Farms disbanded their hog operation about four years ago, but Marita Field still stays very busy with the day to day operations.
“What I do depends on the season,” she said.
In the spring and fall, Marita Field can usually be found working in the fields. Executing her responsibilities at the farm also allows her to work with several family members.
All four of her children - Craig, Chris, Eric and Jessica - have finished school and moved on with their lives, but Marita Field manages to spend a lot of time doing what she calls “normal grandma stuff.”
“I do whatever they want to do,” she noted.
That usually includes hanging out or playing around outside.
There isn’t much time to relax while helping to run a farm in Decatur County, but it’s something she loves and is content to keep doing.
“We plan to stay here forever. Until they plant me,” Marita Field said.
