A simple traffic stop along I-74 early Friday morning turned into something more when Indiana State Police discovered the car was transporting heroin, marijuana and a 17-year-old runaway.

Indiana State Police Tpr. Jason Henkins pulled over a a 2002 Chevrolet Impala driven by Omarr Carter, 31, of Chicago at approximately 1:45 a.m. Friday. Henkins, according to the ISP, witnessed a traffic violation, which began the stop at the 138-milemarker on I-74.

When Henkins approached Carter’s window, the ISP stated in a press release, he “detected the odor of marijuana radiating from within the vehicle.” The odor heightened the trooper’s suspcions and an investigation ensued. Henkins received help from Tpr. Matt Haviland and Tpr. Chris Richey with his K-9 partner, Heiko, according to the ISP.

Through their search, the troopers discovered approximately 12 grams of heroin and a small amount of marijuana.

Carter was taken into custody and booked into the Decatur County Jail on charges of dealing in heroin, a Class A Felony, and possession of heroin, a Class C Felony.

The marijuana, however, allegedly belonged to his passenger. A 17-year-old female was traveling with Carter, according to the ISP press release. The troopers discovered she was a runaway from the Chicago area and took her into custody. She was charged with juvenile delinquency, possession of heroin, and possession of marijuana under 30 grams. She is currently being held at the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Facility.
