Earlier this year in June, the Indiana Right to Life political action committee endorsed incumbent Gov. Mitch Daniels for re-election. On Wednesday, the organization’s chairman Mike Fichter held a press conference on the north side of the courthouse.
A small group gathered to hear Fichter promote the candidacy of Mitch Daniels while hitting hard against his challenger, Jill Long Thompson. Specifically, Fichter targeted her pro-abortion voting while in the U.S. congress.
In what Fichter called “an aggressive record” in voting for abortion rights, he explained Long Thompson’s record of supporting Roe v. Wade, a landmark and controversial United States Supreme Court case from 1973 that essentially protected abortion rights under the right to privacy.
Fichter pointed out that Long Thompson’s campaign is supported by what he called “pro-abortion groups” like Planned Parenthood and Emily’s List, which is another political action committee that is in opposition to the goals of Indiana Right to Life.
The press conference was part of a state-wide effort called Inform Indiana that travels to different parts of the state explaining its message and citing what Fichter called Long Thompson’s “extreme support of abortion rights.” As the group travels from place to place, they distribute a comparison sheet of the two candidates. The comparison, Fichter explained to the crowd, would show Gov. Daniels’ pro-life record and simultaneously prove his recognition of Long Thompson’s record as pro-choice.
“The difference between Indiana gubernatorial candidates on the issue of abortion has never been clearer. Gov. Daniels is pro-life,” Fichter said.
Decatur County’s Republican Party vice chairman Jean Reed, who attended the gathering, also helped to organize Fichter’s visit. Both Reed and the Indiana Right to Life group are supporters of Gov. Daniels’ gubernatorial campaign.
“Of course, we’d like to see Mitch Daniels re-elected,” Reed said.
