Foster program gives pets a “Home for the Holidays”

GREENSBURG – The Greensburg-Decatur County Animal Shelter is hosting the “A Home for the Holidays” foster program again this year for the homeless pets it houses.

Beginning today, pets can be adopted through the foster program and can join a family for the holidays. There is no cost for foster families and pets may be adopted or returned to the shelter from Dec. 26 through Jan. 2. Jan. 2 is the latest foster pets may be returned to the shelter. There will be informal guidelines that prospective foster parents must meet before pets can be taken home.

Everything foster parents would need to care for their furry guest for the duration of its stay will be provided by the shelter. Dogs are sent home with food, collars, leads and transport crates if necessary. Cats are sent home with food, litter and litter boxes, and collars and transport crates if needed.

Foster parents are encouraged to bathe their canine guests before taking them home from the shelter. Shower stalls, shampoo and towels will be available to foster parents.

Fostered pets should be current with vaccinations and parasite control. In the event of a foster parent wanting to host an unvaccinated pet, enough time must be allowed for the shelter to arrange a veterinarian appointment. This will not cost prospective foster parents anything.

Shelter manager Laura Johnston said between three and six animals are usually adopted during the foster program, though two thirds of those pets are later adopted. Johnston said the animals are comfortable at the shelter, but permanent homes are much better long term solutions.

The shelter will be open today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., but will then be closed until after Christmas. The Greensburg-Decatur County Animal Shelter is located at 1635 West Park Road and can be reached at 812-663-9081.

“One pet adopted is one pet saved,” Johnston said.
