Southern Exposure: News from "the south side"

Greensburg — She's baaack! Nobody was as happy as I was when Abby from the Daily News left me a message and asked me if I might be interested in writing my column again. She gave me the number to reach Kevin Green if I were interested.  Well, I was and am.

I started thinking about how long it has been and a lot has changed since I last got to have a conversation with you through the pages of this paper.

I probably can't get away with talking about my kids anymore. They've kind of grown up now and might not take too kindly to reading about themselves.

But, I do want to find out what has been going on in your lives and I would encourage you to call me when you've got news to share. Of course, I work full-time in another capacity so I can't always guarantee that I'll be able to do a full story, but I can at least get the information from you and make an effort.

So, since we last met in print, Westport has grown. I am absolutely tickled to have our own "General Store" in town. No more waiting until Monday to buy what I need in Greensburg. No more excuses to put off doing laundry. I must not be the only one who feels that way since the parking lot is always busy. I do kind of wonder how the neighbors feel about having them next door. Hopefully, the benefits outweigh any other issues.

I will plug the hog roast Westport Baptist Church is hosting Saturday. This event is to help offset the cost of the kids that go to summer camp for a week in Greenlake, Wis. I know that it is a fantastic experience for the young people who go. Participation in the camp isn't limited to members of the church, either. Listening to what takes place at the camp makes me want to go be a part of it. Some of the former attendees have gone on to become counselors at the camp. I believe it will be held at the Outreach Center across the street from the church and tickets are already available. As a matter of fact, I have some! But, I think just about anyone associated with the church can help you out. I think it is $10 for adults, $5 for kids and free for the littlest people. If my tickets weren't laying on my desk at work, I'd know more.

It is always so neat the morning that the bus leaves for Greenlake. All of the sleepy but excited kids, sleepy parents, and chaperones are milling around outside the bus. Just the excitement of leaving in the wee hours puts a special feeling in the air. Instead of a caravan of personal vehicles, one of the church parishioners anonymously always pays for a charter bus so the 8-hourish trip is more comfortable and there is less likelihood of someone going the wrong direction (unless they take directions from Pam; last names left off to protect the guilty!). But, really, driving on a golf course by accident?

I know that there are always good things going on in the area. I just need to get back on your radar. You really aren't bothering me if you call and leave a message. I will have to re-train the family to make sure I get the messages, but I'll be watching and waiting. In the meantime, I'll just go hang out at the DQ because it never lacks for action. We have again managed to get an exchange student addicted to soft-serve ice cream. Our Westport DQ is famous INTERNATIONALLY!

I will have more information in the next column, but I'll give you a heads-up now. Start getting your old prescription medicines gathered up. The Community Action Coalition and local law enforcement are partnering to participate in the National Take-Back program that allows you to safely dispose of those prescriptions.

There will be five locations in the county.

Westport's will be at Town Hall and it is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 28.

Not only are prescription drugs dangerous in the hands of people they weren't prescribed for, they are also hazardous to the environment if improperly disposed of. This program lets you bring in any prescription medicines you'd like to dispose of with no questions asked.

Help keep those drugs from falling into the wrong hands, whether it be a young child having an accidental overdose or someone taking the drugs on purpose that has no business doing so.

I'll be there that morning helping with the collection so stop in and say "hey."

Sorry if I'm a little lame in the kick-off here. I'll get better once I get in the swing and figure out when I'll be in.

You can find my number in the phone book or you can e-mail me your news at twenning64@hotmail.com and I'll be looking forward to helping you get out the good news.

Take care and I'll see you next week.
