Local woman honored as employee of the year

GREENSBURG – Every year, American Senior Communities (ASC) holds a “Quest for Excellence” contest among its 62 locations to choose an employee of the year.

This year, Greensburg resident Georgia Binder won the honor for her dedicated work at Arbor Grove Village. Binder has been providing quality care to the residents at the same location for the last 39 years, starting when it was Odd Fellows-Rebekah Home and staying on after ASC purchased it and opened Arbor Grove Village in 2008, according to the honored recipient.

After becoming a certified nursing assistant (CNA) and working 1,000 hours, Georgia received additional training to become a qualified medication aide (QMA). The supplementary training she underwent means she is able to administer medication to patients, as well as completing all normal CNA tasks.

Many people at Arbor Grove Village have stated that Georgia goes above and beyond what is required of her as a QMA. For example, she has been seen trimming a resident’s fingernails on her day off, offering back rubs to relax others and she even dresses in costume for each holiday to entertain the residents and lift spirits. She also decorates the outside gazebos for the holidays.

“The first time I dressed up, it was for Easter, but I forgot it was Good Friday. One of the residents looked at me funny and asked, ‘Don’t you know what Easter’s all about? But you do look pretty.’ I made sure not to dress as a bunny on Good Friday after that,” Binder said.

During ASC’s Quest for Excellence campaign, over 1,000 employees from all 62 locations in Indiana were nominated in the first round of selection. Greensburg’s Arbor Grove Village had five employees in the first round. From there, each location had to pick one employee to be nominated for the final contest. Residents and staff were asked which employee they though would do the best and the answer was almost unanimously Georgia.
