---- — GREENSBURG – The Decatur County Community Action Coalition (CAC) is proud to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2014 Role Model program.
Annually the CAC produces posters featuring high school students who have made healthy decisions throughout their high school careers, serving as good role models for their peers. Applications for the 2014 role models will be accepted now through Feb. 28.
“We look forward to recognizing a new group of role models for the coming year,” said CAC Chairperson Laura Welborn. “Again this year we plan to select incoming seniors and incoming eighth graders to serve in this capacity.”
According to Welborn, seventh grade and junior-year students are now eligible to apply as Student Role Models through an application process. Students are asked to complete a short questionnaire, explaining what it means to be a role model. Students are also required to include two character references.
Role models will be selected by a CAC committee and announced at each school’s Honor Day. Ideally one female and one male will be chosen from each of the local high schools, as well as one junior high student from each school system. In addition to Honor Day recognition, all will subsequently serve as role models for the following school year (during the student’s eighth grade or senior year). Role models will be featured on the CAC’s Role Model Posters, which are distributed throughout the community. Students will be asked to represent the CAC in various community efforts. Additionally, the incoming senior recipients receive a $200 scholarship toward their first semester of college, courtesy of the CAC.
To be eligible to apply as a CAC Role Model applicants must meet the following criteria:
1. Be a current 7th grader or 11th grader
2. Be a student in good academic standing
3. Be a student in good standing in extracurricular activities, including, but not limited to: work, clubs, sports
4. Be willing to sign a pledge, indicating the intention to make healthy choices and live alcohol, tobacco and drug-free.
5. Complete an application, including a paragraph explaining the following: “What a Role Model Is To Me”
6. Include two references separate from the application.
Applications are due Feb. 28, and all recipients will be recognized at their school’s Honor Day Program, May, 2014.
Applications are available through local guidance counsel offices, or at www.decaturcocac.org. Anyone with questions about the role model application should contact the CAC at 812-222-4CAC.
