Local Honda meetings set

— There’s little doubt a lot of behind the scenes work is being done by Honda representatives and their contractors as the auto manufacturer gets ready to take up residence in Greensburg.
That said, there are also thousands of people waiting to get word on just what is going on.
To that end, the Greensburg/Decatur County Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Corporation and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) invite the public to the first in a series of public informational meetings regarding upcoming community changes.
“We want to give a snapshot of what’s going on,” said Jill Clift, the Chamber’s first vice president. “Our Board talked about what the Chamber could do to help local businesses start to understand the impact Honda will have. We also knew forums were taking place in other cities so we attended them and developed our own.”
The first one, titled “Initial Impact and Community Changes”, is slated for Wednesday in the Greensburg Community High School Auditorium.
From 5:30-6:30 p.m. an open house will take place with several state agencies asked to provide information booths. The formal presentation follows.
“We want to brief the public on the changes that are going on with roadwork and construction and what’s happening that they may not be able to see,” Clift said. “We really want this first session to focus on what’s in progress right now. It’s intended to catch people up not to predict the future.”
The GCHS auditorium holds nearly 1,000 people and Chamber representatives are hoping to see it fill up quickly.
“We’re looking to have between 500 and 700 people attend. We really want a good response because we know these are the issues people are talking about,” Clift said. “Right now, there are so many rumors going around. We want to take the lead on this and put an end to the untruths.”
The session is expected to last no more than an hour and will include talks from a handful of speakers. The Chamber will also give the public an opportunity to have some say on what future topics of the series will be.
“Future meeting topics are really open ended right now,” Clift said. “We’ll wait for attendees’ responses and take it from there.”
