Too much of a good thing?

Greensburg Daily News

---- — Dear Editor:

Given the season, Marilyn decided to do some special holiday food preparation. In preparation for that endeavor, she brought home a splendid ring-bindered cookbook, entitled “The Best of Amish Cooking.”

Reading through the tome, she came upon, on Page 183, a recipe for Apple Butter. Marilyn decided she would make this tasty treat for our holiday eating pleasure.

The recipe is as follows:

• 40 gallons apple cider

• 40 bushels apples

• 40 lbs. granulated sugar

The instructions stated that the work commences at 5:30 a.m., with successive key steps at 2:30 p.m.; 3:30 p.m.; 4:30 p.m.; and concluding at 8 p.m. The directions declare that the mixture must be “stirred constantly” from 2:30 until 8 p.m.

Stunned, she gave up on the whole idea. It’s apparent our immediate family of two isn’t large enough to utilize Amish recipes.

By the way, these huge quantities of ingredients and all this intensive labor is said to yield 25 gallons of Apple Butter.

We’ll never know. We’re worn out from just thinking about it.

Best regards,
