Why an assault rifle in the home?
I was pleased to learn that the owner of the M4 assault rifle used in the recent accidental killing of a Greensburg youth has been charged with two felonies.
Regardless of the outcome of this deeply distressing matter, the important question will never be adequately answered, that being: Why did the man own such a weapon and for what purpose did he intend to use it?
Personally, I cannot think of any reason for a reasonable person to own such a weapon – one clearly designed and intended for military use.
I do believe some folks who purchase such weapons have, way back in their minds, a dim sense that at some point they will sally forth to bring down the government. What folly, what misguided thinking – if, indeed, thinking is even involved in the process.
I am not a gun hater, and have always been a gun owner, but I’ve never found any reason to own ugly military-style weapons.
I learned safe gun handling at my father’s knee at a very young age; conversely, this man has clearly demonstrated a total ineptitude in how to handle firearms in an adult manner, to the sadly demonstrated peril of his children.
I received my information from the Greensburg Daily News and the Rushville Republican via a story written by Brent Brown and I thank those publications for their civic service.
