News mayor's assistant position: Why are new positions being created?

Dear Editor:

Dear Editor:

A proposed new position of Mayor’s assistant / public relations director has only been passed on it’s first reading by the City Council, at the request of our Mayor.

There is one more reading yet to go which will take place at their next city council meeting, which is currently slated for Monday, May 5, at 7 p.m. at City Hall. With the second vote on this issue this new position will be created.

I see where the Greensburg School system (according to the Greensburg Daily News today, April 10, 2014) has to cut $500,000.00 from their budget. And guess where they are going to cut it.........personnel.

In this economy with the state of the state and the nation why are positions being “created” for our city? It wasn’t that long ago that our Mayor joined with other Mayors to protest against Governor Pence cutting the business tax because the Mayors said it will cut funding to the cities.

Our Mayor said that if that happens the “services” to the taxpayers would have to be cut. While I realize that funds cannot be transferred from one department to another...when you have the street department superintendant saying at the council meeting that he doesn’t have the funds to properly address the condition of the streets in our city and that other cities have started to utilize general funds to do so....these general funds may need to be utilized more and more for the “needs” of the taxpayers......Why are new positions being created?

The former secretary to the Mayor made $29,000. The new position according to the GDN will be $36,000. A new engineering position went from the person who was doing the job at $39,000 to a professional engineer at $89,000. We have not grown as was predicted, was this necessary?
