Local seeks place for young musicians to play after high school

Greensburg Daily News

---- — Dear Editor:

I am doing this again, but this time, on a subject I’ve wanted to talk about for a long time. It’s about the high school musicians.

These kids are all the time playing music, but when they graduate, there’s no place for them to pursue it as a career. I love to listen and dance to the big bands. The sounds of the brass, woodwinds, strings and the drummer set the rhythm.

There is nothing like the full sound of a big band. Swing dancing is starting to come back now and anyone can dance. If they can walk, they can dance. You just have to do it in rhythm to the music. Dancing any dance is just learning a few basic steps.

The two step is just two steps forward and two steps back. The waltz is a box, one to the forward, one to the side, one to the back and one to the side. The waltz is a great dance; you can do so much with it. For the swing step, step back with the right foot, then back and do two taps with the left foot. This is very similar to the cha-cha step. On a cha-cha step, step back, then forward, then tap both feet.

They are all easy to learn. Remember to stay in rhythm. You don’t dance with just your feet. Listen to the music and pick up the beat.

Now I’ve wandered off, but we need to come up with a venue where these musicians can use their talent. It’s much more fun to dance with a partner and create your own style.
