A new face will be spearheading the Decatur County United Fund’s efforts to raise money for local not-for-profit organizations.
Joane Cunningham, the new executive director of the United Fund, replaces former director Jenni Hanna, who is moving on to other things but will remain an active volunteer with the organization.
Cunningham is excited about the new challenges, and is in the process of getting a feel for things and learning the ropes.
“I know the community very well, and I think that will be an asset as we decide on new directions with the board’s assistance,” Cunningham said.
She has much experience in the field, including prior positions on the allocations committee and several years of engaging in the community. She has held positions in the marketing department of the former Union Bank and Decatur County Memorial Hospital. She is also the owner of Cunningham Custom Graphics.
An executive director’s duties are first and foremost overseeing the general functions of the United Fund, according to Cunningham. This is something the board felt she was more than capable in handling.
“We are thrilled to have found such a capable and energetic candidate to take the job as director,” the United Fund board’s president Sarah Nahmias explained. “The United Fund’s history in Decatur County has been one of a tradition of sharing, and Mrs. Cunningham certainly embodies that as she will share her talents in helping us reach our goals to serve Decatur County residents.”
While the focus may be on Cunningham at the moment, Nahmias sought to note the accomplishments made by outgoing director Hanna.
“We must recognize the tremendous effect she has had in developing the outreach of the United Fund over the past six years,” Nahmias said. “She has helped to direct and motivate and help us give back to the community nearly $2 million during her time as executive director, and that is phenomenal. We wish her the best and look forward to a different, but continuing relationship with her as a volunteer.”
Hanna expressed the same sentiment, and was happy to see the way Cunningham approached her new job.
“We are excited to have her on board, and are glad to see the excitement and energy she brings to the position,” Hanna said.
The Decatur County United Fund supports 23 agencies in Decatur county. The United Fund dollars are invested in a wide range of programs and services that benefit the elderly, children, families and needy individuals of Decatur County. The United Fund’s next event will be in June 6. The Strawberry Fest will take place on the square and the United Fund volunteers will be on hand selling shortcakes to raise money.
