A hit to strike out cancer

The second annual 12-Hour Coed Softball Game to benefit the American Cancer Society experienced good times and a good turnout Saturday.
The proceeds from the all-day event are added to the proceeds from the June 14 Relay for Life to be donated to ACS, the second largest source of research funding to combat cancer. Of those who came out to play Saturday, four are currently struggling against the disease.
Last year’s event was in memory of Mike Hartwell, for whom the first ball was pitched. This year, organizer Bev Rivera said, it is in honor of co-organizer James Bumbala, who is struggling against colon cancer.
“He never complains,” a fellow committee member said.
Despite six major surgeries, Bumbala remains happy with good friends and family, he noted.
The event was visited by the Adams Volunteer Fire Department that brought a donation. In addition, it was sponsored by Hydra Air Hydraulic Hoses and Fittings; Rob Plue of Edward Jones Investments; Mark Wickens of Nationwide Insurance; Butch Kennedy of Stonebridge Trucking; Dennis Koch of Koch Automotive; Frank Hamilton and Tebbe Law Office; Sharon Baer of Share Care Incorporated; Cincinaty ATC Tower; Trackside Café; Dr. Trowbridge; Mozingo Sanitation; Abrell’s Photo Works; Acra Automotive Group; Coca-Cola Bottling Company; Jess and Cindy Moton and Rivera Screenprinting and Embroidery.
In addition to the long list of official contributers, each player paid $25 to participate and food and raffle tickets were sold. The day started slow, Bumbala said, but picked up as the hours ticked by. The organizing committee broke into groups to divide responsibilities. Umpires, including Greg Redd, Eric Ewing and Andy Hunter, volunteered to participate.
Last year, the event added $3,600 to the funds raised by the Revera Screenprinting Relay for Life Team. The full impact of this year’s event was not yet known prior to the end of the event Saturday. However, donations toward the Relay will continue to be accepted through June 14.
