From baby food flavor guessing games to cake and punch, the Community Baby Shower at Decatur County Memorial Hospital made every effort to help expecting moms feel comfortable and welcome.
Every three months, the Women’s Center at the hospital hosts the event to help patients know what to expect once they get to the hospital. The tradition started with the construction of the new department four years ago, Becky Knecht LPN said.
This time around was the biggest party yet, with 10 couples who RSVP’d ahead of time.
“We’ve seen a big increase in siblings and family, including grandparents and friends, coming to support expecting mom’s at the shower,” Knecht said.
Even though the event does not yet offer gifts for the expecting elder siblings, the children get excited about gifts for the baby nevertheless.
Judy Miller-Combs, unit manager, said it is good for the expectant mothers to get to know the department in a relaxed environment because it helps them feel more comfortable when delivery time comes.
Jana Pollock, RN, was on hand to offer a tour of the department, including a walk through the nurses’ station. She noted patients are constantly monitored during labor and a press of the call button appears on screen for the nurses to ensure needs are met.
If a cesarean section should be necessary, surgery is just on the other side of a set of double-swinging doors, she pointed out.
DCMH strives to make patients feel welcome, Knecht said. By offering gifts and a positive experience, the department strikes a balance between community comfort and necessary technology.
