Famous Christian artist to visit Greensburg

Joe Hornaday

Nationally acclaimed song and vocal artist Michael English will lend his voice to a concert coming up later this month.

At 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 25 at the First Baptist Church in Greensburg, the Christian singer will be performing many of his hits and songs from newer albums.

English has been a part of the Christian music industry for more than 30 years, and during that time was a member of several groups before establishing a solo career. That career led to hits on the contemporary Christian and adult contemporary music charts. English’s self-titled album debuted in 1992 and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Contemporary Christian charts and earned him two Dove Awards, the prizes given away by the Gospel Music Association that honor achievements in Christian music.

However, at the peak of his career, English’s personal life was shattered and the facts of his adultery were disseminated into the public. Shunned by the Christian marketplace that had given him his career, he has since leaped back into the arena. With a new CD about the themes of redemption, English has gone back on the road touring for the first time since 1994.

Pastor Dave Thompson had been aware of English’s career for many years. When family members attended one of English’s concerts, they told Thompson that whatever it takes, he needed to get the performer to Greensburg. Luckily, English was going to be in the area, and Thompson jumped at the chance.

“We’re quite excited,” Thompson said.

He believes many Greensburg residents know Christian music and have certainly heard the songs of English before, but they may not know his name. According to Thompson, he had been trying to bring in artists for years, and the pieces fell into place for this concert.

Tickets are available at the Resource Center or the church’s office. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children under age 10.

“We can only seat about 350 people, so tickets are limited,” Thompson explained. “It should be a very special evening.”
