A simple vehicle stop turned into a winning lottery ticket against alleged criminal activity for the Indiana State Police (ISP).
According to the ISP, Tpr. Jason Henkins was traveling on I-74 Wednesday evening when he noticed a blue 2008 passenger car headed westbound at a high rate of speed. He initially pulled the car over near the 139 mile marker in Decatur County for the speeding infraction.
During the stop, according the ISP, Hankins questioned the driver and the passenger. The two shared conflicting stories with the trooper about their travel pans on their way from Cincinnati, Ohio, to Chicago. Hankins discovered a large amount of cash on the passenger and the driver also had a large amount in her purse, which peaked his suspicions.
After receiving permission to search to vehicle, Hankins called in Tpr. Matt Haviland and Tpr. Adam Bullock to assist. During the search, Haviland discovered a large amount of cash “concealed within a natural void in the vehicle,” according to the ISP.
Both driver and passenger denied the cash belonged to them. With the occupants forfeiting the cash, which totaled $10,390, the troopers took it into their possession to be processed through forfeiture proceedings, according to the ISP.
The money is believed to be involved in some form of criminal activity. No additional information was available on the driver or passenger.
